Thesis "Splenosis"
Principal Findings:
- Splenosis in up to 50% of patients splenectomized for trauma.
- Patients with splenosis following splenectomy have a normal immunoglobulin profile: patients without splenosis have an abnormal immunoglobulin profile.
- Pitted erythrocyte counts are an unreliable method of assessing splenic function in patients with congenital spherocytosis, due to impaired vacuole formation by the sphereocyte.
- Recurrent splenic function following splenectomy confers immunological benefit by raising IgM and normalizing IgG and IgA.
- Splenectomy may me a risk factor for myocardial infarction.
- Recurrent splenic function does not reduce the risk of myocardial infarction in splenectomized patients.
- Auto transplantation of splenic tissue protects rats from bacrerial challenge but does not eliminate the risk of infection.
- Autotransplantation of splenic tissue following splenectomy in Hodgkin’s Disease is a feasible proposition.
- Tuftsin has no dramatic effect in protecting splenectomized or splenotic rats from bacterial challengel
Thesis Accepted December 1984
