Thesis                                  "Splenosis"

Principal Findings:

  1. Splenosis in up to 50% of patients splenectomized for trauma.

  1. Patients with splenosis following splenectomy have a normal immunoglobulin profile: patients without splenosis have an abnormal immunoglobulin profile.

  1. Pitted erythrocyte counts are an unreliable method of assessing splenic function in patients with congenital spherocytosis, due to impaired vacuole formation by the sphereocyte.

  1. Recurrent splenic function following splenectomy confers immunological benefit by raising IgM and normalizing IgG and IgA.

  1. Splenectomy may me a risk factor for myocardial infarction.

  1. Recurrent splenic function does not reduce the risk of myocardial infarction in splenectomized patients.

  1. Auto transplantation of splenic tissue protects rats from bacrerial challenge but does not eliminate the risk of infection.

  1. Autotransplantation of splenic tissue following splenectomy in Hodgkin’s Disease is a feasible proposition.

  1. Tuftsin has no dramatic effect in protecting splenectomized or splenotic rats from bacterial challengel

Thesis Accepted December 1984
